Why Do So Many People Suffer from Dry Eyes?

Dry eye is an epidemic condition — shocking, isn’t it? Before we explore why, let us first understand why the eyes need to stay moisturized all the time.

The human eye is made up of cells that contain a lot of water, so a moist environment is essential for their proper functioning. The iris is the colored part of the eye, and in front of it lies the cornea. For the cornea to function properly, it must remain clear and transparent, which is only possible when the corneal cells are adequately hydrated. Without a transparent cornea, good vision is impossible.

There are also other important reasons why the eyes need to stay wet. When germs or debris enter the eye, they need to be washed out, which is only possible if the eyes are moist. When we experience irritation or an infection, the eye defends itself by producing extra tears. Sometimes dust can block the tear ducts, making the eyes appear glassy as they try to fight the infection with more tears. This is why maintaining enough moisture is crucial for healthy eyes.

Types and Causes of Dry Eye

Xerophthalmia is considered the most severe form of dry eye. It is caused by a deficiency of vitamin A and is mostly seen in underdeveloped countries, particularly affecting children. However, this is not a major issue in the U.S., where patients usually complain of symptoms such as sore eyes, gritty sensations, sensitivity to glare, itchiness, and stinging.

There are two basic forms of dry eye: evaporative dry eye and aqueous deficiency dry eye.

  • Evaporative dry eye is caused by a lack of oil in the tear film.

  • Aqueous deficiency dry eye is caused by a lack of water in the tear film.

Both conditions have their respective treatment methods.

Modern Lifestyle and Dry Eyes

Recent research has confirmed that dry eye is mainly caused by working on computers for long periods, especially in air-conditioned environments. This is largely due to the decrease in blinking rate. When focusing on a computer screen, people naturally blink less — blinking rate can decrease by up to 30 percent. Blinking is essential because it helps produce tears to lubricate the eyes.

When this reduced blinking occurs in an air-conditioned room, the eyes become even more dehydrated.

Other Contributing Factors

Diet also plays a role in dry eye, so maintaining a healthy diet is recommended. Smoking is another known cause. Additionally, contact lens wearers are particularly susceptible to dry eye.
