Can IPL Cure Dry Eyes?
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is used to treat various skin conditions and also for hair removal. Recent research has shown that it is also used to ease dry eyes. IPL primarily target blood vessels in the eyes, especially the eyelids oil producing glands, which are known as meibomian glands.
IPL is known before two decades. It is effective in treating facial rosaceae and is also recommended by many doctors. Recently it is also known that it is effective towards meibomian gland dysfunction and ocular rosaceae. In an IPL procedure, infra red light of specific wavelength is emitted on the inflamed vessels present on the eyelids. They look like spider veins and affect the eyelid margins. As a result, the oil producing glands get inflamed. The treatment procedure takes 15 minutes for one eye and is also painless. Usually three sittings are prescribed over a span of three months.
IPL is very effective for patients who have mild to moderate dry eyes. A careful eye examination is necessary to know what has caused meibomian gland dysfunction. It is also done to know more details about the quality of tear film as well as the osmolarity. The procedure is to be carried out by an experienced surgeon. After the surgery is complete, antibiotics and nutritional supplements are prescribed. However dry eyes cannot be cured permanently. The patient has to manage it throughout life.
